Altitude Films will launch ‘GoldenEra‘, a new documentary which tells the incredible story of the creation and legacy ‘GoldenEye 007’ for Nintendo 64 (N64), in celebration of the games 25th Anniversary.
Long considered one of the greatest video games ever made, ‘GoldenEye 007’ was released for the Nintendo 64 in the summer of 1997 after two and a half years of gruelling hours, missed deadlines and an unwavering commitment to perfection. Developed in a farmhouse in Warwickshire by a small ragtag team of university graduates, most of whom had never worked on a game before, this iconic first-person shooter surpassed all expectations and went on to change gaming forever. Told through interviews with the very people who created the revolutionary game, along with leading game journalists and industry professionals, ‘GoldenEra’ captures an unmissable moment in the history of gaming.”
Created by Melbourne-based director Drew Roller, ‘GoldenEra’ looks at the influence ‘GoldenEye 007’ had on the games development team, fans, and critics, and examines the games long-term impact within the gaming industry, showcasing popular titles, such as ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Halo’, that wouldn’t exist without the influence of ‘GoldenEye 007’.
Speaking on the documentary, Roller says, “‘GoldenEye 007’ wasn’t just an obsession for me in the late 1990s; it inspired my career, and continues to influence me to this day. And it didn’t just influence who I am – through speaking to so many game industry experts, it’s clear it informed a lot of other careers. And perhaps moreso, the game went on to shape titles that have become phenomena of popular culture, such as ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Halo’. Equally, ‘GoldenEye 007’ introduced design conventions now standard in countless successful titles. When you play a game today, there’s almost certainly some ‘GoldenEye 007’ DNA in there. That’s what makes this story so important to tell.”
